Monkey in the Middle

When I found out my niece was pregnant I started looking for fabric. I needed to get an early start to fit another quilt into my every growing project pile. She was expecting a girl, but didn’t want anything pink.

I searched but nothing inspired me. It was very discouraging. I looked at baby quilt images, researched different designs and still nothing. One day I stopped into Jo-Ann’s and found this monkey ensemble stacked neatly together. It was perfect!

I really wanted to keep this quilt simple to showcase the fabric. Jen’s Allen Baby Quilt from Sew What! provided the inspiration for the pattern. I’d just completed a free-motion quilting class at New Pieces and decided to give it a try. I already had the Monkey Love embroidery suite from Great Notions that coordinated perfectly.

Congratulations! It’s a boy.
Wait … What?! … Is she serious?!!
I guess that little hat I spent all day making won’t work now. It’s pink!

I can’t tell you how relieved I was knowing the fabric I chose was very gender neutral.
